Titus 1
1Paul, a slave
of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to [the] faith of [the] chosen
ones of God and [the] full [or, true] knowledge of [the] truth, the [one]
according to godliness, 2in [the] hope [or, confident expectation] of
eternal life, which the incapable of lying God promised before eternal times
[or, before time began], 3but in its own times [fig., at the proper
time] He revealed His word in [the] proclamation which I was entrusted
with according to [the] command of God our Savior,
4To Titus, a
genuine child according to [our] common faith: Grace, mercy, [and] peace from
God [the] Father and [the] Lord Jesus Christ our Savior!
5On account of this I left you in Crete, so that you
should set in order the things lacking and appoint [or, set up] elders [Gr. presbuteros]
in every city [cp. Acts 14:23], as I commanded you--6if anyone is beyond reproach,
[the] husband of one wife [fig., a one-wife kind of man], having faithful [or,
believing] children, not under accusation of reckless living or insubordinate. 7For
it is necessary [for] the overseer [Gr. episkope] to be beyond reproach,
as a
steward of
God, not self-willed [or, stubborn], not quick-tempered, not
addicted to wine, not violent [or, quarrelsome], not greedy for dishonest gain, 8but
a friend of strangers [or, hospitable], loving what is good [or, tireless in
activities prompted by love], sensible, righteous, holy, [and] self-controlled, 9holding
firmly to the trustworthy word according to the teaching, so that he shall be
able also to encourage [others] in the sound teaching and to convince the ones
speaking against [it].
10For there are also many [who are] insubordinate,
idle-talkers, and deceivers, especially the [ones] of the circumcision, 11whose
mouth it is necessary to be silencing, who overturn [or, upset] whole
households, teaching what is not necessary, for the sake of dishonest gain. 12A
certain one of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans [are] always
liars, evil beasts, [and] lazy bellies [fig., gluttons]!” [i.e., a quote from Epimendes, ca. 600 B.C.] 13This testimony is true; for which cause
rebuke them sharply, so that they shall be sound in the faith, 14not
paying attention to Jewish myths and commandments of people, turning themselves
away from the truth. 15All things indeed [are] pure to the pure, but
to the ones having been defiled and unbelieving nothing [is] pure, but
both their mind and their conscience [are] defiled. 16They profess to
know God, but they deny [Him] in their works, being detestable and disobedient
and disqualified for every good work.
